Yossis Glatt Sushi Inc.


One of my grandsons and I had just visited a relative at Maimonides Hospital, in Boro Park. We were both starved and we both wanted Chinese. During the visit, another relatives – who lived in the neighborhood – raved about Yossis Glatt Sushi Inc. (5221 Fort Hamilton Parkway – on the corner of 53rd St. – Brooklyn 11219 – Tel: 718.576.6636) which reopened its doors yesterday, under new management, and we decided to try it. While it is not the upscale type eatery we normally review in these pages, the food, the service, the prices made for a delightful surprise!

As we watched the Sushi Chef prepare the rolls, my grandson had their Sweetheart Roll…

…which consists of spicy salmon, spicy tuna, rice and avocado. I shared it with him it was very good.

I ordered the American Dream Roll

…it comes with spicy salmon, cucumbers, avocado topped with spicy mayo. I loved it!

We followed these with a beef dish for him and a chicken one for me. He had Beef Lo Mein

He found the beef juicy and tender, the vegetables cooked to perfection, the Chef’s sauce delicious.

I had the Sesame Chicken

Aah, those nuggets! They came bathed in a delicious sauce and the right balance of tenderness inside with just a bit of crispness on the outside. It was a great way to end the meal.

The portions were nice, and the freshness and the dishes’ taste well worth the wait and more than worth the price.

I’ll definitely be back again and again; maybe I’ll even see you there, gentle reader.

The Loft Steakhouse


Back in August, Costas Mouzuoras, my good friend and walking wine encyclopedia at Gotham Wines and Liquors, told me he “tasted the best kosher steak ever and one of the best in all of New York.” “Where?” I asked. “Some place in Brooklyn called The Loft,” he answered. This past week, I finally got around to visiting The Loft Steakhouse (1306 40th. Street, Brooklyn; NY 11218 – between 13th and 14th Avenues in Borough Park – Tel: 718.475.5600). kosher-scene-copyright-copy22

The couple at the table next to mine were true oenophiles, but the fact that the restaurant could accommodate their tastes speaks volumes.

I started my repast with the Crispy Beef appetizer…

It consisted of slow braised beef, crisped and smothered in a fantastic, tangy ginger galze, with a vegetable saute of crimini mushrooms and sugar snap peas. It was a very worthy introduction to the dish to follow.

I continued with a medium well Delmonico Steak…

A delicately seasoned, beautifully marbled steak, cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, served over superbly seasoned mashed potatoes, and topped with thin strips of caramelized onion.

I ended the meal with a Napoleon, though beautifully presented, it was not a worthy crown for this meal. It was quite good – and more than acceptable at a lesser eatery – having been completely spoiled by the two dishes that preceded it I expected a richer taste…

I washed it all down with a Rum Punch

It was made with tropical fruit juices, nutmeg, bitters, rum and strawberry syrup perfectly complementing a superb dinner.

Temur, my waiter, was very knowledgeable and made great suggestions. Service was impeccable. Prices were not cheap, but well worth it. I’ll just have to go back again and again, to taste the rest of their menu.

Yummy Grill


It may be small and unpretentious, but don’t let that fool you. This hidden jewel, Yummy Grill (543 Kings Highway – off East 4th; Brooklyn, NY; Tel: 718.375.7557), serves up delicious food featuring Cavcasian and Israeli cuisines.

Chef/Owner Eli Hizkiyahu graduated, as Chef, from Israel’s famed Tadmore Hotel School in Herzliya. He arrived on the American shores about 19 years ago and made a successful career using food as his canvass. From fashioning Tfillin out of watermelons, to birds about to take off in flight – out of fruits and vegetables, he’s done it all as he travelled the length and breadth of the US plying his trade of food decoration at numerous catered and private affairs. About 9 months ago, Chef Eli and his wife opened up their current venue.

My companion RN and I stopped by for lunch, recently. She started out with a Lamb Soup…

It was nicely presented, spicy and very savory; in fact, it could have served as a complete meal by itself. It contained a few lamb bones, slivers of lamb and rice. Excellent! She described it as perfect comfort food for a winter day.

I started with an Avocado Salad. I have never been a fan of avocado, but the taste of this one was exceptional. Colorful, nicely but subtly spiced, it contributed to change my mind about avocado.

We then shared a platter of Baby Lamb Chops

They were tender, juicy and had a very attractive aroma; came with a side dish of mixed Grilled Vegetables, consisting mostly of mushrooms, onions and peppers grilled to perfection.

We followed with a plate of Baby Chicken Kebab…

Tender, juicy delicious, it also came with those superb Grilled Vegetables (we just couldn’t enough of them!). All was served us in whimsically shaped but practical china, a delight to the eye. I washed it down with an Israeli malt. RN finished her meal with a delightful Tea w/Nana (mint leaves), while I had a coffee.

Ample portions, superb flavors, and very reasonable prices… isn’t it time to visit Yummy Grill?
