This Coming Wednesday Evening’s Radio Show – Bonnie R. Giller

Our guest on Blogtalkradio.com, this coming Wenesday at 8:00pm (Eastern Time) will be Nutritionist Bonnie R. Giller. What are her credentials? Bonnie R. GillerMS, RD, CDN, CDE, has published two cookbooks: Recipes to Remember – Heart Healthy Can Be Delicious and Passover the Healthy Way: Light, Tasty and Easy Recipes Your Whole Family Will Enjoy. She is now hard at work on a third cookbook which will contain over 300 recipes for healthy living.

She has been in private practice since 1987.  Her main message to people who are trying to lose weight is that Diets Don’t Work.  Bonnie would like to introduce the concept of Intuitive Eating which is eating mindfully and not mindlessly.

In her practice she also provides Medical Nutrition Therapy, which is treatment of various disease states through nutrition, as for example with diabetes.  Bonnie Giller is a certified diabetes educator and work extensively with people who have diabetes and pre-diabetes.  She provide nutrition services for those with gastrointestinal issues as well.

On these days when we hear so much about healthy eating habits, when the traditional Eastern European Jewish cuisine – while delicious – can actually be harmful, Mrs. Giller delivers the message that healthy eating need be neither boring nor unimaginative. As her books attest, you can eat healthy and still enjoy the wholesome flavor of myriads of dishes. The secret lies in the ingredients and the preparation.

Meanwhile, in case you missed it, why not listen to our conversation with Ladino‘s owner/Chef Alexandre Petard?

Don’t forget to tune us in this coming Wednesday at 8:00pm (Eastern Time), for a very interesting, informative, entertaining talk with Bonnie R. Giller.

Tomorrow Evening’s Radio Show with Chef Alexandre Petard

Tomorrow evening, at 8:00pm (Eastern  Time) on The Kosher Scene Radio Show we will be talking with Chef Alexandre Petard from Ladino – Tapas Bar And Grill.

Chef Alexandre speaks to us about his training, his love of cooking, the various countries where he worked, the famous kosher and non kosher restaurants in New York whose kitchens he directed, and about the philosophy behind Ladino, his newest venture. Above all, you will hear more than you would expect from just a one dimensional chef. As he speaks with passion about his art, a whole portrait of the man behind the Chef’s jacket emerges.

Meanwhile, in case you missed it, why not listen to our last broadcast? We spoke with Doris Schechter from My Most Favorite Food. Mrs. Schechter came to this country in a transport organized by the legendary Ruth Gruber when FDR, in an effort to court the Jewish vote, allowed 1000 Jewish refugees to come to this country and escape the ravages of WWII in Europe in 1944. Since then this Holocaust survivor, who arrived on these shores as a young girl, went on to become a successful restaurateur and cookbook author in NYC.

Please listen in tomorrow evening at 8:00pm (Eastern Time) for an interesting talk with Chef Alexandre Petard.

We’ll be wait’n for ya!

The Kosher Scene’s Radio Show for this Week

This coming Wednesday evening (March 21, 2012), at 8:00 pm (Eastern Time), we will talk with Lévana Kirschenbaum about her newest book, The Whole Foods Kosher Kitchen. The book was originally published as a paperback in November. While we praised the contents, we were nonplussed with the book’s production. This week the book makes its appearance in a larger, hard bound, format, with easier to read fonts and layout. The photography, by Meir Pliskin, has undergone a huge change as well.

While the appearance changed radically, while the new book is truly a pleasure to behold, the contents are the same. At the time, my co-blogger SYR wrote:

Though aesthetically the book’s layout is rather ordinary looking, the content is superb. It’s jam-packed with healthy mains, soups, salads, pastas, beads and desserts; aside from the general index, the cookbook includes a Passover index and a gluten-free index, with recipe notations indicating gluten free or gluten free adaptable. The recipes and text reflect a seasoned master chef who poured her culinary heart and soul into this cookbook. All content is meticulously organized and the format though visually lackluster nonetheless delivers the author’s usual witty humor and éclat in a most lively entertaining way.

Truly a hitchhiker’s guide to all things good-for-you and delicious, you’ll get never-ending use out of this comprehensive culinary work. The variations that accompany the recipes are awesome as are the tips and running commentary that weave through the pages. It’s like having a master chef or super balabusta mom right there with you preparing your best. Meir Pliskin’s photographs are tastefully done though the publisher’s cropping and cheap printing is somewhat disappointing. Lisa Young’s nutritional info though not revolutionary in content, serves as a useful reminder of healthy choices.

We will be speaking about the joys of whole food, this book is geared to the cook that wants healthy and delicious fares for her family but who doesn’t much care about the fuss of spending hours preparing the food.

Meanwhile, in case you missed them, please listen to the two shows we did last week: Alec Borenstein – Success Coach, Motivational Speaker and 9th Kosher Wine Extravaganza.

Don’t forget to tune us in this coming Wednesday evening (March 21, 2012), at 8:00 pm (Eastern Time) on BlogTalkRadio.com/kosherscene. We’ll be looking out for ya!

Documentaries, Books and Wine – This Evening’s Radio Show

Joseph Dorman - Photo by: Pepi di Giacomo

Our guest this evening on BlogTalkRadio will be award winning documentary filmmaker and author, Joseph Dorman. Mr. Dorman, as founder of Riverside Films has made the award-winning theatrical feature Arguing the World, about the controversial sixty-year political journey of the eminent Jewish writers and thinkers, Daniel Bell, Irving Howe, Irving Kristol and Nathan Glazer and how they shaped the American political debate. The New York Times described it as “enthralling…  one of the deepest portraits of… of ideas ever filmed.” Currently, another of his movies is showing around the country and its subject is again a very Jewish one: Sholem Aleichem: Laughing in the Darkness.

Check out the schedule of screenings around the country here. It’s coming back to New York in a couple of weeks.

Joseph’s work has appeared on PBS, CBS, Discovery Channel and CNN. He will be with us this this evening at 7::30pm (Eastern Time). I found Joseph Dorman to be an interesting conversationalist, someone who loves to deeply research the various subjects he writes and films. You’ll find his subject matter fascinating. I did!

Aron Ritter, President and founder of the Kosher Wine Society, will revisit us next on the second half of the show for a discussion of KSW‘s upcoming wine tastings this month.

Meanwhile, if you missed our show last week with Martin Davidson, you can hear it here.

Please, listen to us this evening on BlogTalkRadio.com at 7:30pm (Eastern Time), I know you will enjoy it!

Tonight’s Radio Show – Alessandra Rovati From Dinner In Venice

Last minute cancellation due to unforeseen emergency!

Last minute cancellation due to unforeseen emergency!

Italian cuisine has earned a very well deserved place in the pantheon of superior cookery from around the world. Within that cuisine, it is the Cucina Ebraica, the Jewish Italian cuisine, which is considered its crown jewel. Our guest on The Kosher Scene Radio Show, this evening, will be Venetian born and bred Alessandra Rovati from  Dinner In Venice.com website and blog.  We will discuss the history of the Jews in Italy, a history that goes back almost 2200 years, the history of Jews in Venice specifically and, of course, the famed Jewish Italian cuisine.

Venice is where the first Jewish Ghetto came to be in 1500. The earliest known mention of Jews in Venice is around 1090. The census in 1152 showed 1300 of our coreligionists, mostly merchants, originally from Germany and  the Levant. Throughout its history, Venice has been the venue for some of the most picturesque chapters in our people’s history, featuring both famous and infamous Jewish personalities.

Please tune us in this evening on the internet’s blogtalkradio.com, at 8:00 pm (Eastern Time), for what promises to be a very interesting, and informative show.

If you missed our show last week with Ezzy Duchman from Jewpon, you can hear it here. The guest was interesting, the subject will save you money!

Please, don’t forget to tune us in this evening’s for our conversation with the charming, Alassandra Rovati, when we will explore the  history and the cuisine of Jewish Italy at 8:00pm (Eastern Time). We’ll be wait’n for ya…

***UPDATE***

Tonight’s Radio Show…

This evening on Blogtalkradio we will be speaking, at 8:00 pm (Eastern Time), to Ezzy Duchman, who founded Jewpon together with his brother Zalmy. At a time when the coupon field is starting to get crowded, do we need yet another player? Does the new kid in town offer anything different or is it more of the same?

Jewpon started out in December 2010, it’s first deal was in Miami and since has expanded to Lakewood, Monsey, Manhattan, Los Angeles, Boca Raton, Toronto and overseas to Yerushalayim. They also have a lot of national deals going at any given moment. Aside from all these, the company also runs various charity drives as we shall hear. The company has been written up and discussed by examiner.com, CNN Money, Market Watch, Yiddish Life, The Miami Herald, Jewish Life and Dan’s Deals.

A typical Jewpon Deal

Ezzy will explain what Jewpon is about, what makes it different. Please listen in this evening to The Kosher Scene Radio Show at 8:00 pm to 8:30 pm (Eastern Time) for an interesting, informative and money saving conversation.

If you missed our show from last week, you can access our archived interview with Poopa Dweck, author of the most beautiful kosher cookbook I’ve ever owned – Aromas of Aleppo, here. Mrs. Dweck is a community activist based in Deal, NJ. Her cookbook is more than just a collection of recipes, the photos are truly amazing, the notes accompanying each recipe, the history and cultural tidbits set it far apart from any other cookbook I’ve ever seen. Both her cookbook and our conversation attest to her passion for the subject, it’s well worth a listen!

Meanwhile don’t forget to tune us in this evening!

Thanks to Sidney and Tammy Cohen  we did an incredible one hour show last week, live from 18 Restaurant (240 E 81st St, New York NY10065; Tel: 212.517.2400). Our guests lineup included: Gil Marks – author of Encyclopedia of Jewish Food, Chef Lévana Kirschenbaumwho spoke of her brand new cook book. This evening, at 7:30 pm (Eastern Time), we will broadcasting again. You can listen to our show at BlogTalkRadio/kosherscene. We will start with a reading of a very short piece I wrote a few years back (which was reprinted on The Jerusalem Post and on Ynet.com) it’s about the first Yom Yerushalayim – Jerusalem Day, commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem. I was there when the Old City – Ir Hatika became ours again…

Then we’ll turn the conversation to Shavuos and dairy food with Brigitte Mizrahi and Moshe Vogel from Anderson International Foods (who manufacture the cholov Yisroel line of cheeses Natural & Kosher, and the non-cholov Yisroel brands Les Petites Fermieres and Organic and Kosher. We will follow with Kim Amzallag (whom I prerecorded yesterday afternoon), who will talk to us about the new Shavuos issue of Kosher Inspired and much more.

A tiny selection of Anderson International Foods' cheese offerings

If you missed that show you can hear the archive here at: Talking with Irving Schild.
